Richard Somerville writes: “Is learning about climate change like having a colonoscopy?”

In the February 2014 edition of Earth’s Future, a new publication from the American Geophysical Union, Richard Somerville has written an article called, “Is learning about climate change like having a colonoscopy?” The article addresses the challenges of communicating climate change in the face of risk-avoidance, comparing the phenomenon wherein people avoid valuable medical tests for fear of bad news, to people’s aversion to learning about the realities of climate change. Addressing these fears and concerns early on, Dr. Somerville writes, can aid the efficacy of communication and the increase the potential for action.
